This project delivers a bold contemporary extension to a traditional home on the edge of a conservation village south of York. Designed to blend, somewhat distinctively, with the original 1990s house, the new singlestorey additions frame expansive views of the southfacing garden and create a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors. Fullheight sliding glazing opens the rear elevation completely, flooding the interior with daylight and establishing a strong connection to the landscape.
A key part of the brief was futureproofing the home with a groundfloor master suite, supporting longterm wellbeing and accessible living. Working closely with the clients, we introduced generous corneropening doors and uninterrupted garden views, enhancing the sense of calm and openness throughout.
Adjacent to the extension, a freshwater pond acts as both a reflective feature and a natural relaxation space, with raised stepping stones weaving through lush planting. High quality aged brickwork, with concrete parapet capping and expressive, three tiered vertical headers and sills, creates a modern yet timeless character, complemented by a sedum green roof that boosts biodiversity. Slimframed glazing and carefully placed rooflights ensure bright, inviting spaces all day long, shaping a home designed for comfort, sustainability, and enduring beauty.
