This project delivers a sensitive and thoughtfully designed extension to a Grade II listed GP practice in Leven, East Riding of Yorkshire. Originally a Victorian Police Station, its former cells now serving as characterful consultation rooms. Our approach enhances the surgery’s functionality while carefully preserving its historic charm.
The new singlestorey rear extension adds five consultation rooms, a generous meeting space, and practical utility areas, all seamlessly connected to the existing layout via the side extension. Access from the rear ensures the main practice remains undisturbed during daily operations.
Respect for the building’s heritage guided every decision, from maintaining the vaulted brick ceilings of the former cells to safeguarding natural light and ventilation throughout the original rooms. Externally, vertical timber cladding and floortoceiling glazing create a lively, contemporary elevation that complements rather than competes with the historic structure.
With refined detailing, harmonious materials, and lightfilled interiors, the extension brings together past and present—supporting modern healthcare needs while celebrating the building’s unique history. The extension has been shortlisted for Best Architectural Design (Healthcare) 2026 at the Healthcare Design awards.
