The Oakhaven Care Home redevelopment transforms a former council extracare site into a contemporary 64bed facility at the heart of Acomb, York, for Burlington Care. Thoughtfully positioned along the main street, the building is designed to sit comfortably within its urban context, adopting a twoandahalfstorey form. A welcoming northfacing undercroft entrance provides clear arrival and subtly buffers neighbouring properties, shaping a footprint that balances presence with sensitivity.

To the north, 19 carefully arranged parking bays—including disabled and ambulance spaces—support smooth daily operations, complemented by dedicated service areas and a discreet delivery layby. The building’s orientation maximises natural light, with southfacing gardens offering residents bright, tranquil outdoor space throughout the day.

The architectural character blends local references with modern detailing. Red multi-brick, slateeffect tiles, generous glazing, and timber accents create a warm, contemporary identity, while varied rooflines and projections break down the massing. A tensilewired Green Wall system adds a dynamic, natureled dimension, softening façades as the landscape matures. Large windows with bespoke timber fins enhance privacy, comfort, and wellbeing. Overall, Oakhaven delivers a welcoming, humanscaled design that enriches its surroundings and sets a new benchmark for modern care environments.
